Child Safety: An Issue All Parents Need to Know
Being
a parent is probably one of the most unforgettable experience a person will ever
have. Just from the moment the news is broke by the doctor, most parents are
overly ecstatic with the concept. Moms most especially make drastic changes in
their lifestyles to ensure that the baby they have in their stomachs are well
protected, well-nourished and well taken after. This is an instinct that most
mothers, human or animal have in their systems.
But this protection doesn’t stop after childbirth. On the contrary, the child is
now exposed to more dangerous elements that could either harm the child or
endanger its life.
While many people may think that keeping the child at home is enough to keep it
away from danger, what they don’t know that many statistics show that our very
own homes can be a haven for danger.
Here are some of the things you should look out in your home to prevent any
mishaps to happen and ensure the child safety features of it:
Child safety in the kitchen
• When cooking, use the back burners; turn pot handles away so your child cannot
easily reach it.
• Never leave hot foods and drinks near the edge of the table or a counter.
Knives and other pointed objects must be kept in childproof-protected drawers.
• Unplug those items that are not in use, wind up cords with a twist tie.
• Keep all dishwashing and cleaning fluids out of reach.
Child safety in the bathroom
• There are too many things that may draw your child’s attention in the
bathroom. To avoid accident, a safety lock outside the bathroom door is a good
idea, where only you or anyone older in your house can reach it.
• Never leave vitamins, medicines, cleaning supplies and other poisons around.
Keep it in locked cabinets and out of reach. If your child ingested something,
immediately call a doctor or a poison control center.
• Never leave your child in the bathroom or in the bathtub alone. Always drain
the bathtub after use.
• Test the water’s temperature before putting your child in the bathtub to avoid
burns.
• To avoid electric shocks, electrical items such as razor and hair dryers
should always be unplugged and away from the water when not in use.
Child safety in bedroom
• Get rid of loosely dangling cords that may possibly entangle your child's
neck. So be sure that its crib is far from these hanging cords such as curtain
cords, drapes, electrical cords and etcetera.
• Hanging toys and mobile crib toys should be placed high so that the child will
be unable to reach it and pull it down.
• All furniture and decorations should be steady and well mounted. A rocking
chair may look nice and be very relaxing, but if a child stands on it, he or she
may fall and get injuries.
• Improperly affixed pictures can fall and hurt the child. Heavy lamps and vases
are no-no's as well as they may be tipped over and fall on your child.
Going over your house with a fine toothed comb can be the very best way to child
proof it. Check all your furniture and ornaments to ensure that your baby wont
be hurt. Follow all these tips and learn some more to ensure that your precious
child is safe at all times.
