Fake security cameras: do they help?
Fake security cameras or camera decoys or dummy cameras are
classified as surveillance cameras made as copies of the real thing
to make intruders think that they are the real thing or to fool
anyone who could be planning something with our property that some
is watching. These cameras are placed in places that are very much
open to people and can be easily spotted by other people and by
persons who could be on the look out for a camera.
People passing through these said places could easily notice these
fake cameras and they are made to believe that the place is closely
monitored by CCTV camera security system.
Some of the cheaper decoy security cameras can be easily spotted
with their lenses, these cheap imitation do not have real camera
lenses (the "fake lenses" are just an opaque circular piece of
plastic). Another thing that is noticeable is the cable. A fake
camera has just one cable as opposed to the real thing having one
cable for image signals and one power cable. Other dummy cameras
include in their construction broken parts of real cameras.
Some dummy cameras or fake cameras disguise other security gadgets
to further fool people in to thinking that they are completely
useless. Some dummy cameras include motion sensors disguised as
cameras. Some are really just empty camera casings. Some of these
dummy cameras may also include real flashing lights or flashlights
and a motor to simulate a real cameras pant-tilt motion.
Since these fake cameras are actually non-functional and have no
real security use, they are mostly used in places where the only use
for a CCTV camera is to make minor thievery and vandalism or to make
people more conscious of how they act around a certain place. It can
also be used in places like an assembly line of a small company or a
small factory and places like such.
Small businesses like restaurants, pizza parlors, and convenience
stores would have very good use for these dummy cameras so they
could deter small theft and minor vandalism to their property. Real
professional thieves that have the eye for recognizing dummy cameras
are not so easily fooled even by motion sensors or by the simulated
pan-tilt motion so does not really stop them from committing the
crime.
Dummy cameras are also used to augment real surveillance systems.
Adding the heavily guarded look to place where there is a real need
for a surveillance system does this. These dummy security cameras
are used to increase the deterring effect without actually incurring
much cost in the process of beefing up the security system. Some
security systems companies now offer fake security cameras in
addition to the real ones that they offer.
They come in a bundle together with the real cameras, this is done
by these companies to have a budget easy security system for small
businesses that would want to keep their assets safe from theft. A
typical camera package offered in the market today would include
four real cameras and four dummies cameras, all of them look like
the real one.
Would be suspects that are monitoring an establishment would be
likely to think that all of the cameras are real since they all look
alike and if in case they try and take out one of them the real ones
would be watching them.
