How to secure your home at no cost
Home security can be pretty expensive with all the
gadgets that you have to buy, surveillance cameras, password
encrypted locks, the works. Not only do these gadgets secure
everything that you own but also the lives of your family. Who can
blame security companies then from putting a pricey cost on their
products? After all, no price is too expensive for the life and limb
of the people that you love.
Not all people, however, can honestly afford to buy all the
state-of-the-art equipment that keep the homes of the rich and the
famous safe. In fact, the most that the middle class can afford to
purchase is the old-fashion lock, which can be picked anytime by a
master thief. And unless they have hidden riches inside their house
that other people do not know of, people don’t see the necessity to
place so much safety measures in their homes.
Still, observing safety measures in the homes does not only involve
modern and state-of-the-art equipment. One can secure one’s home
without adding it to the budget. Here are some tips in keeping your
home safe at no cost.
Lock everything.
Yes. Locks can be pick-locked anytime but locking your doors and
windows will still make it harder for the common thief to go inside
your house and steal your belongings. When you leave the house, make
sure that all your doors and windows are closed. Even those at the
bedrooms, the back door and the bathrooms. Garages are also
vulnerable spots. Remember that thieves can use any points of entry.
Make it a habit every time you go out. If you keep forgetting about
it, put a signage at your door reminding you of the task. Do not
only check if it is locked; also check for sign of breakage and wear
as these are also points, which thieves can use to their advantage.
This is especially true with the backdoor and the back windows.
Pieces of glass
One way to secure the perimeters of the house in addition to putting
a heavy-duty lock at the main gate is to build a tall fence or wall
around the property. This way, thieves will have a hard time going
inside the property itself. Some people even put pieces of glass on
top of the walls so that people who attempt to climb will think
twice.
Lights on.
A thief likes to work on the shadows because they won’t have to
concern themselves with the thought of being caught or seen. This is
why most of the homes that are broken in are those that are located
in suburbs that are not well lit.
If you want to keep your homes safe, put lights on your property and
keep it there every night. It may add up to the electricity bill but
it can work in scaring the thieves off your property.
Neighbor system
People in a community should help each other in keeping their homes
safe. Form a watch group every night that will patrol the streets.
You can also suggest a buddy system where in one family will watch
out for another’s house at night especially if the occupants are not
in the house. This way, they will learn to cooperate with each other
and at the same time keep their homes safe.
