Monitoring Your Home Security for Your Peace of Mind
Crimes are inescapably increasing. No one is sure to be safe, not
even in their own home.
Only a few people really try to care about their home security until they
experience being intruded by burglars first hand. And this attitude of being
complacent is what the burglars enjoy and what you should definitely pass up on.
Of course, there are ways to make your home less preferred by prowlers.
It is important to be aware of a burglar’s worst enemies: noise, light and time.
Burglars would not have an easy time if he is to work with noise, if he is to
labor with light, and if he has to take time to force his entry.
Try making the vision of intruding your home a noisy endeavor. Note that noise
is an effective deterrent against prowlers. Many burglar alarm systems are
available in the market, like those which can be conveniently mounted on doors
and windows and motion detectors which releases distress signals when movements
are sensed. Dogs are also effective in scaring away would-be burglars, not just
because of the possibility of being bitten, since their sounds can generate
disturbance and dig up attention — perhaps the last thing burglars wish for.
Avoid putting up high backyard fences and try trimming the bushes in the garden.
This may mean a reduction in the concentration of your privacy, but it will be
worth the added security. Don’t let the burglars get away from sight; let them
tackle one of their enemies — light. Installation of exterior lights slashes
darkness which is a burglar’s best friend.
Burglars hate time, too. When they have difficulty in breaking in and gets
delayed, their tendency is to find another easier target. Simple devices such as
padlocks, screws, glass blocks, sash locks, bars and grates can discourage
burglars to go on with the break-in.
You may try to make extra efforts to secure your home by developing and
practicing some helpful habits:
Avoid providing information to strangers or unidentified phone callers. Report
to the police dubious characters in your area.
Set up a routine to ensure that doors and other possible entry points are locked
and burglar alarms are switched on.
Be cautious with the handling of your keys. Refrain from carrying house keys on
key chains marked with your address. Also, avoid putting your keys on places
outside your house where burglars usually know where they are hidden.
And when you are out for vacation, these tips will be helpful: Leave the
curtains and blinds in their customary position. Decrease the ring volume of
your telephone so that no one can hear it outside. Hold the delivery of
newspapers. Use lights with automatic timers which will turn on at appropriate
times. Coordinate with your neighbors and the police as to how long you plan to
be away so that they can keep watch on your area.
These are tips to deter burglars, but if in chance that burglars have gotten in
your house, it is very important to know what to do. Meeting head-on with a
thief inside your home is scary. If possible, run away and call the police. If
you can’t break out, hide and lock yourself in a room.
Your chances of being harmed if you try to intervene with a burglar are high. Do
not attempt to defend yourself with weapons because you may wind up having the
weapons aimed on you. Cooperate and stay as calm as possible.
