Organizing a Neighborhood Watch
As much as people would love to live in a peaceful
community, there are criminal elements that do not share these
views. These individuals would rather steal or do something heinous
which makes everyone a potential target.
This can be prevented if everyone works together through what is
better known as a neighborhood watch. This is when the community
decides to watch each other's back and reports any suspicious people
or activity outside to the proper authorities.
The homeowners cannot do it alone. This requires support from the
office of the mayor and those in law enforcement.
The first step in organizing a neighborhood watch program is to
speak to someone from the Chamber of Commerce. These people are
important because of the power it has to market such a plan, sign up
new members and offer the necessary training modules to make it
work.
Once this people are on board, it won't be that difficult to get the
cooperation of the police. This is because law enforcement always
has a close relationship with members of the Chamber of Commerce.
The police may also teach the members techniques on self-defense and
the proper ways to respond when there is an emergency. Those who
make it through the training will get a certificate and at time be
deputized when it is deemed necessary.
The third step is to go to city hall. This is because the community
may not have the fund for this to last for the long term so support
must from the municipal government.
The mayor may not give that much to the cause. This is the reason
that the neighborhood may try getting sponsorship from private
companies. This shows that it is more than just a publicity stunt
because some of those employees live in that community.
The local radio and television networks should also do its share to
promote the neighborhood watch program. Some will even go to the
extent of making flyers and posters because it is a worthy cause.
Each community must assign a coordinator to look after everything
and then delegate the work to the block captains. Meeting must also
be held weekly or whenever something important comes up so everyone
will be informed.
There is no age limit to become apart of the neighborhood watch
program. This means someone as young as 8 or 10 can contribute to
the cause.
A member of the neighborhood watch must learn to suspect when
something is amiss. Some examples of these are screaming, shouting,
a gun shot, unusual noises, strange people or vehicles lurking
about, someone being forced into a car and a stranger talking to a
child.
There is a saying that goes, " shoot first and ask questions later."
It is better to be safe than sorry so the police have to be contact
immediately so a unit can be sent to investigate.
A neighborhood watch is not a vigilante group. It is merely a
support group that helps the police stop or prevent a crime from
happening.
If there isn't a program set up yet, this is the best time to start
one. The efforts started by one individual will surely be good for
everyone especially when people can sleep well at night feeling a
sense of peace surrounding the community.
