Ways to Secure Your Garage
So you have installed security measures in your
house. You have bought deadlock bolts for your front door, cut your
tall hedges and bushes to get rid of potential hiding places and
you've probably even bought an alarm system. But is your house
really secure?
How about your garage? The garage is probably the most neglected
part of the house when it comes top security. Which is unfortunate
since the garage is a very good entry point to any part of the
house. In fact, many burglars have target the garage first because
they know that this is usually the most vulnerable part of the
house.
The garage can also be a treasure throve for thieves. This is
because a garage is often filled with valuable items such as bikes,
lawn mowers, tools and other expensive equipment. Garages are also
usually empty at night so thieves feel secure entering your house
through the garage. Once burglars get into the garage, getting in
the rest of the house is not so hard to do anymore.
Below are some things that you can do to increase the security in
your garage.
1. Install garage door openers
One good investment to incase the security of your garage are
electric garage door openers. If you have electrical garage door
openers, it would be very hard for burglars to go in by forcing open
the garage door. In fact, it is virtually impossible for burglars to
open garage door with electric openers. You must remember though to
change the factory set combination. Most electric door openers have
combinations that are preset to either 0000 or 1234 or any other
easy-to remember sequence of numbers.
2. Install good garage doors
Aside from being neglected when it comes to security. Garage are
also usually the most neglected when it comes to renovation.
Homeowners do not seem to mind blowing huge amounts of cash when it
comes to renovating their living rooms or kitchens. But they would
usually scrimp when it comes to the garage. You must make sure that
you install good garage doors. This means that there must be no
loose panels, damaged corners, broken panes and rusty parts which
are considered as weak spots and can be pried open by burglars.
3. Secure garage windows
If your garages have windows then they must be secure too. It is no
use securing the door if you let the other entry points easily
accessible. be sure that garage windows are securely locked to keep
the burglars out.
4. Secure the door leading to the house
Secure the door leading to the house to make sure that the burglar
would not be able to enter your home even if he was able to enter
the garage. As said earlier, the door linking the house and the age
is a common entry point for criminals. Ironically, this is one door
in the house that owners often forget to secure. Ideally, the door
from the garage should be as secure as your front door. Install
deadbolts if you must and put chains on it. If you can afford it,
then install an alarm on it as well.
5. Keep your garage door closed
Keeping your garage door closed at all times except when a vehicle
is coming in or out is probably the simplest yet most effective
thing you can do to secure your garage.
